AHRI standard ratings for direct-geoexchange heat pumps

April 2, 2009 - The certification program includes heat pumps consisting of one or more factory made assemblies normally including an indoor conditioning coil with air moving means, compressors) and refrigerant-to-earth heat exchanger(s), including means to provide a heating function or a cooling function or both.

Development of National Occupational Standards in Canada

On 12 December 2008 the Canadian GeoExchange Coalition (CGC) issued a call for expressions of interest from Canadian installers, to help develop the continent's first National Occupational Standard for GeoExchange technology.

Working together with Canada's Electricity Sector Council (ESC), and with funding assistance from Natural Resources Canada, CGC will bring together eight to ten installers from Canada's various regions during the week of 20 January 2009, in Montreal, to draft a step-by-step document defining the tasks executed by a typical installer. CGC and ESC will then publish the draft Occupational Standard for industry and public comment online, before finalisation in late March 2009 and publication in Summer 2009.

Eco-labeling regulation for heat pumps

Aug 6, 2007 - The regulation was approved on 26 April 2007 by the EU Eco-labeling Board. The vote was not unanimous as four countries voted against the regulation and two abstained.

An important part of the regulation is the concession for natural refrigerants in that the threshold values for heating (COP, PER) and cooling (EER) may be 15% lower than for man made refrigerants.

Deadline for EU F-Gases Regulation expired

Jul 10, 2007 - On 4 July, a law ruling the treatment and recovery of fluorinated gases in stationary air conditioning, heating and refrigeration became effective in all EU countries. However, not all governments and industries have done enough to comply.

The EU regulation ruling high-global warming fluorinated gases, mainly hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in all kind of stationary applications, entered into law on 4 July 2007. Many of the EU Member States, being obliged to transfer the provisions into national law, still haven't fully implemented the legislation. They claim that EU-wide consistency, technical complexity, or complicated market mechanisms are still issues of concern to stakeholders who seem to be over-challenged by the complexity of the issue.

Amendment to Canada's Energy Efficiency Regulations published

Feb. 05, 2007 - Amendment 9 of the Energy Efficiency Regulations was registered on November 2, 2006 and published in the Canada Gazette Part II on November 15, 2006, p. 138 to 194.

The amendment:

  • updates the test method and increases the stringency of energy performance requirements for central air conditioners and heat pumps less than 19 kW
  • increases the stringency of existing minimum performance requirements for three types of air conditioners used in the commercial/institutional sector. Packaged terminal air conditioners and heat pumps are heating and cooling assemblies mounted through the wall, and are often found in motel and hotel rooms. Large air conditioners and heat pumps and internal waterloop heat pumps are used for heating and cooling large commercial buildings;

Amendments to Japanese Laws and Regulations for GHG Emission Reduction: how will they affect air conditioning and heat pump equipment?

Sep 2006 - Shotaro Ito, Japan - With the coming into force of the Kyoto Protocol in February 2005, developed countries have been required to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG). In Japan, various measures are being taken to achieve the country's target of 6 % reduction in GHG emissions during the fi rst commitment period, from 2008 to 2012.

Implications of the 13 SEER for the Supply Chain - Is Heat Pump Technology Challenged

Sep 2006 - James Walters, USA - Implementing the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) new energy efficiency standards for air-conditioners and heat pumps creates challenges especially for the "downstream" (of the manufacturer) parts of the heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) industry's supply chain.

Heat sources - suitable product groups for the European Union Eco-labelling scheme

Jul 2006 - The European Eco-label is voluntary tool which was established in 1992 and revised in 2000, when its scope was extended from products to services. Its Flower logo is awarded to the products which have the least environmental impact throughout their entire life-cycle. It enables manufacturers to attract attention to their environmentally friendly products or services and helps consumers identify them.

The 13 SEER standard to go into effect

Jul 2004 - USA - The Second Circuit Court in New York finally ruled that the 13 SEER standard as originally promulgated by the Department of Energy in 2001 should go into effect in January 2006 for new central air conditioners and heat pumps. This will reduce the energy use by new air conditioners by 23 % from the current standard (SEER 10). According to ACEEE (American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy), this will reduce the peak demand for electric power by 41 500 MW by 2020.
